about the artist

Experimenting with high-quality materials and cutting-edge fabrication techniques, my creative practice explores how the sculptural form might capture the raw energy, and frenetic atmosphere of UK sub-culture, and youth-cultures more broadly. Drawing upon my own experience of the late 80s / early 90s alternative scenes, including punk and acid house rave culture, I aim to grasp at something of the freedom and hedonism of these times through my work. These subversive movements have become part of my DNA, and continue to inform my creative expression both aesthetically and energetically.

Inspired by the ‘parallax shift’ effect, a visual technique I explore in my film and video design work, I utilise acrylic layering methods and framing to create the illusion of an image suspended in space. These images, often borrowed from iconographic cultural references, transform according to the viewer’s perspective, creating a sense of depth and motion as they move around the artwork. In this way, I think of my works as a cultural archive – emblematic objects housed in acrylic boxes, but also dynamic contemporary artworks that come to life according to one’s gaze.

Perhaps at odds with the DIY and disorderly nature of sub-cultural movements, my practice is also a pursuit of perfection. Ever striving for flawless visual effects and an immaculate finish, I am dedicated to an ongoing process of material experimentation. Working over the past six years with museum-grade acrylic, and its glass-like qualities, I consider how colour, form, light and reflections interact to create an immersive perceptual experience for the viewer. Ultimately, I am searching for a synergy of structure, feel, and visual rhythm through my works. Like music, which is deeply interwoven into my practice, I am looking for a quality in which all the different elements fold into place to create something transcendent – distilling the powerful euphoria produced when music, movement, and self-expression comes together.
